An Overview of Timber Garden Fence Panels
64Ready made garden fence panels include four main types: Waney edge lap panels, Feather edge closeboard panels, Palisade panels, and Trellis.
Waney edge lap fence panels
Waney edge lap panel fencing is the most economical option for your garden fence. Lap panels are made of horizontally fixed overlapping larch slats framed in a timber frame. The panels are usually pre-treated with preservative to give them a golden brown colour.
Feather edge closeboard fence panels
An alternative to Waney edge lap panels, is Feather Edge Fencing or Closeboard Fencing. Close board fencing is fencing which is made up of posts and rails, with feather edge boards fixed vertically to the rails. The boards are overlapped to give a stronger fence more likely to stand up to high winds and gales.
Featheredge close board panels provide a stronger, heavier alternative to overlap Waney edge panels and hence are a little more expensive than them.
Palisade panels
Picket fences, are used when an unobtrusive fence solution is needed. Picket fences come in 3 types of tops: pointed top, round top and flat top.
Trellis panels
Trellis should not be ignored as a fencing material. Used in conjunction with conventional panels or on its own between posts it can form an attractive backdrop for climbing plants, or be built into a pergola type of garden feature. There are traditional square pattern or diamond pattern, flat top trellis and arch top trellis.
